SUMMARY OF THE PEARL

The book by John Steinbeck was a classic. It describes the greed in every person and how it makes them do things they didn't know they could do.

The story took place in the colonial period in a place called La Paz. It first describes a couple doing the things that they do every morning. They were fishermen, so they have to go out every morning to catch fish. However, that day they caught a big clam, and inside of it, was the biggest pearl, Kino (the main character) has ever seen. He was very happy that he got the pearl, he started thinking of all the things that he could do with the money exchanged for the pearl. He wanted a bigger house, better fishing equipment and most of all, a better education for his son Coyotito. But on the same day, his baby son was stung by a scorpion. He then had to take him to the doctor and give him proper treatment. The doctor didn't really want to save his son's life, he will only do it if Kino has money. Kino then has to tell everyone that he has the pearl. After that, Kino has always been attacked by some dark figure, and everyone's greed was revealing especially the doctor and at the end Coyotito died.

I like the story very much because it taught me that everyone has greed in them and sometimes we let it take control over us and we will end up losing everything that had value to us.
